Colleges for veterans

Not a ranking. The record on 5,334 schools, from VA’s own data.

Every school here is one where veterans and service members are actually using their benefits — 5,334 institutions across all fifty states, between them serving 943,628 students on VA education benefits.

We don’t rank them and we don’t rate them. What each page shows is the record: how many veterans are there, what VA paid the school, whether it charges veterans the in-state rate, whether it gives credit for military training, how many students graduate, and whether VA has flagged it. Make your own judgment from that.

How to read these pages

Students on VA benefits is the single most useful number. A school with hundreds has an office that knows what it’s doing; a school with eleven probably doesn’t.

A caution flag means VA or another agency has recorded an action against the school. Read what it was. Some are administrative, some are not.

In-state tuition for veterans can be worth more than any scholarship. At a public school the difference between resident and non-resident rates often runs to five figures a year.

Credit for military training is the one most people never ask about, and it is routinely worth a year. More on that.

Seven schools that are not in VA’s data

Every page above is built from VA’s institution file, so a school only appears if veterans are using benefits there. Seven military schools are not in it. The five federal service academies charge no tuition and enroll nobody on the GI Bill, so VA has no record of them at all. Two of the military junior colleges are absent for their own reasons.

They have pages here anyway, written by hand, because leaving them out would send someone looking for West Point to a dead end:

The rest of the military colleges — the senior military colleges, the maritime academies and the other two junior colleges — do take GI Bill students, so they sit in the listings above like any other school. All twenty-one are gathered here, with what separates them.
